Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve is located in Chandrapur district of Maharashtra(India). This park covers an area of 625.4 square km and was created in the year 1995 after merging it with Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary. The name Tadoba is derived from the name of the god worshipped by the tribals who reside in this area, who called him “Taru.” “Andhari” refers to the Andhari river that flows through the national park.
History of Tadoba
Tadoba National Park has a fascinating history. According to legend, “Taru,” was a village chief who was killed in a mythological encounter with a tiger. A temple dedicated to lord Taru exists to this day beside the Tadoba lake, which is frequented by adivasis. The park was the favoured hunting grounds of the Goond kings. In 1935, hunting was completely banned in the area and in 1955, it was declared as a National park.
What to expect at Tadoba
Tadoba National Park is primarily known for its tiger population, which, according to a recent census, stood at approximately 46. Apart from the Great Bengal Tiger, the other main attractions of the park are the Leopard, Sloth Bear, Rusty Spotted cat, Spotted Deer, Wild pig, and Flying Squirrel. The park also boasts of over 195 species of birds, which include the honey buzzard, jungle fowl, grey-headed fishing eagle, and the paradise flycatcher.
Getting to Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve
Sonegaon airport, Nagpur, is the closest airport to Tadoba National park at a distance of 140 km. The airport is well connected to Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, and other major Indian cities. Chandrapur railway station located 49 km away is the closest railway station. The park is also well connected by road, and the nearest bus stop is Chimur at a distance of 32 km.
Best time to visit Tadoba
Pench National park is open between 15th October and 30th June every season, and the best time to visit the park is from November to May. Also, note that the park is closed to visitors every Tuesday, so plan your trips accordingly.
